Citizenship Interview Checklist: What to Bring

Being prepared for your USCIS naturalization interview means having the right documents and knowing what to expect. Use this checklist the night before.

Required Documents (Must Bring)

These are the documents USCIS specifically requests in your interview notice.

  • Interview appointment notice (Form I-797C)
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) — original
  • Valid passport(s) — all passports held during your residency period
  • State-issued ID or driver's license
  • Any re-entry permits or travel documents (Form I-131)

Additional Documents (If Applicable)

  • If married to a U.S. citizen: marriage certificate + spouse's proof of citizenship
  • Prior marriage: divorce decree or death certificate for each prior marriage
  • Tax returns: last 3-5 years of federal returns (Form 1040)
  • Any arrests: court disposition documents for every arrest, even dismissed charges
  • Name change: court order or marriage certificate showing name change
  • Male applicants (18-25 at any point): Selective Service registration card

Day-of Tips

  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early — security lines can be slow
  • Bring originals AND photocopies of everything
  • Keep all documents in a folder, organized in the order they appear on your N-400
  • Dress professionally — first impressions matter
  • Turn off your phone or set it to silent before entering
  • You may bring one person for emotional support (they wait outside during the interview)
